Wolverine Slide
Conversions

The Device and Converting the Slides to Pictures

The slides are converted using a Wolverine F2D Super Plus slide converter, purchased from Costco for $84.

The device has a 20MP sensor but uses high compression to give 2.5MB files.  This (among other things) can give problems such as loss of detail, poor contrast (occasionally leading to false colors), darkened pictures, and  washed out areas.

These problems can be corrected, in part, by photo editing and adjusting things such as lightness, contrast, saturation, etc.  Pictures with washed out areas can be converted again using a lower EV setting.  Some of the pictures have embedded dust etc. (i.e. can't removed by simple cleaning with brush and blown air) which can be removed with photo editing tools such a the scratch remover, clone brush, or smoothing filters.  Photo editing is an art, and a matter of taste so I haven't made any changes to the pictures.  You can edit them to your taste or we can discuss a group editing project.

I plan to convert all the "interesting" slides (i.e. containing family members, homes, churches, and really nice scenery shots, etc.)  I'm not going to convert all the slides that are simply landscapes, cityscapes, etc. Or of people that simply a series of repetitive shots.  Or at least not at this time.  I'll make an Excel file and a photo album to keep track of all the pictures converted from the slides.  When all of Mom's carousels and loose slides are converted, I'll put them on a dvd and mail them out.  In the meantime, you can download them from the links given below.

Mom's Slide Collection

All together, Mom may have a few thousand slides.  A lot of these, especially in the later years, are purchased slides.

She has:   several small boxes of slides, mainly circa 1950, covering their trip back to San Diego from Washington DC, land and city and desertscapes around San Diego and Southern California.

About 13 carousels of slides covering our childhoods.

Perhaps another dozen carousels covering you and your children.

About 6 carousels of slides from their Holy land trip.

About 3 carousels of slides from their Alaskan cruise with Uncle Jerry.

About 14 carousels of slides from their trip to Europe.

She says that the Holy land, Alaska, and Europe slides are almost all purchased.

Useful Software

It might be handy to have software to do basic (or more) photo viewing, editing, bulk renaming of files, and to make an album of thumbnails that can be searched, indexed, sorted etc.  If you don't already have software to do these tasks, I can recommend the following.  They are all free.

Irfanview:  Great photo viewer.  Can make slideshows.  Can also do basic photo editing.  Go to irfanview.com and follow the links.  Make sure to download the plugins as well.

Renamer:  Nice utility for the bulk renaming of files.  Get it at http://www.albert.nu/programs/renamer/.

MyAlbum:  Nice program to catalog pictures.  You can sort, add keywords, search, view in various ways -- I really like it.  Get it at:  http://pmeindre.free.fr/MyAlbum.html.

Filezilla:  FTP client for bulk download of individual pix rather than large zip file.  Contact me for details.  Available at https://filezilla-project.org/

Obtaining the Pictures for Yourself

Option 1:  Download the zip file.  Like many people, my download speed is much faster than upload.  So rather than trying to upload a huge 200MB file, I upload the individual files and then zip them on the website.   However, this may result in some loss of detail.  If you wish to compare, you can download the files singly by typing in your browser address bar:  cowellscorner.com/Wolverine/Car1/PICT0009.JPG or http://cowellscorner.com/Wolverine/Misc0/PICT0010i.JPG, for example.   You can get the filenames from the zip file, or the Excel or MyAlbum catalogs (see below).

Option 2:  If you prefer to download the individual files rather than the big zip you might be able to use a web spider or download manager.  Or you can use FTP.  Using FTP is really quite simple.  Just contact me for details.

Old Stuff

The carousels and pictures below will be renamed to fit the time sequence.  I'm going to change the filenames from PICT#### (as they come off the converter) to Car#_####.  This will keep the filenames unique so I can store them all in one folder.  This makes things easier if you're using a photo album to manage the pictures.

Excel Catalog:  http://cowellscorner.com/Wolverine/Slides_old.xls
MyAlbum thumbnail catalog:  http://cowellscorner.com/Wolverine/000slides_old.alb,   this contains thumbnails linked to the pix for Misc0 and Car1.  It also contains just the thumbs for Car2.  To use it you need to install the program (link given above) or at least download the viewer -- http://cowellscorner.com/Wolverine/MyAlbumViewer.exe.  and place it  in the parent folder of folders Misc0 and Car1.

Misc0:

page -- http://cowellscorner.com/Wolverine/Misc0/Thumbnails2.html
    zip file --  http://cowellscorner.com/Wolverine/Misc0/slide_pix.zip
22 miscellaneous slides that were loose in one of Mom's drawers.  From late '40s to mid '60s.  WashDC,  San Diego Zoo, Our trip back east to NY, etc

Car2:
Most of the slides in this carousel are in poor condition.  Fuzzy, faded color, changed colors, dusty, and other damage.  Don't know if was due to poor film quality, poor storage, poor processing, or what.  The pictures will be posted later.  The thumbnails are included in the photo album.
